| I’ve been MIA for a while, bet you all missed me! Anyway I got a new CD this week, a little album called “Pages” by a couple guy’s named Shane & Shane. These guys don't really need my help to sell CD’s but they do deserve the props. As always they recorded some great tunes, some new, some redone, but all good. Some may prefer the simplicity of classic Shane & Shane but the production on this CD is smooth enough that I never missed it. The standout for me personally is “Embracing Accusation”, but check it out for yourself, bet you can find something you like!

| Something has been edging its way into my life for several years now, a belief, and mindset that doesn’t make sense to so many people around me, at the heart of this is the question of what is true worship. I have been so blessed in the last couple months to have some opportunities to express what I believe, and I’ve also been blown away by some of the responses I’ve gotten from some people, and the outright confusion I get from others. So you say what on earth is he talking about now, well here it is. I am a musician and singer, not great at either, and I’m also a “worship” leader, but I know and believe with all my heart that music is not a required part of worship! I feel the arguments spinning around in peoples heads as I type this, but I challenge you to find a verse in scripture that tells us that music is a required act of worship, go ahead. Any luck?? I know what you found, some verses that encourage us to use music as a act of worship, but nothing that says its a requirement. Here another point, look up the word worship in the dictionary, anyone see the word music anywhere in the definitions? I don’t think so, what you find looks pretty much like this, wor·ship [wur-ship] noun, verb, -shiped, -ship·ing or (especially British ) -shipped, -ship·ping.–noun 1. reverent honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred. 2. formal or ceremonious rendering of such honor and homage: They attended worship this morning. 3. adoring reverence or regard: excessive worship of business success. 4. the object of adoring reverence or regard. 5. (initial capital letter ) British. a title of honor used in addressing or mentioning certain magistrates and others of high rank or station (usually prec. by Your, His, or Her). –verb (used with object) 6. to render religious reverence and homage to. 7. to feel an adoring reverence or regard for (any person or thing). –verb (used without object) 8. to render religious reverence and homage, as to a deity. 9. to attend services of divine worship. 10. to feel an adoring reverence or regard. —Related forms wor·ship·er, noun wor·ship·ing·ly, adverb —Synonyms 3. honor, homage, adoration, idolatry. 7. honor, venerate, revere, adore, glorify, idolize, adulate. Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) Based on the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2006. so, why do we focus so much on music in the Salvation Army, and the the church in general? Here’s what I think, I think we have become far to interested in what pleases us, rather then what pleases the One we claim to be worshiping, we are selfish, and run the risk of making church a show to attract new members, who are only looking for the same thing. Am I saying stop all the music, no, clearly music is encouraged and should be used, but it doesn’t have to be used, maybe if worried less about musical style and quality, or having it at all, and focused more on things like loving others, giving, serving, and going to people and places in need, we would start to understand what worship is truly about, and we would truly honor God. Ks “I sense a lot of pastors are being dragged behind the worship music bus with their music minister and congregation’s appetite for music behind the wheel. And they don’t know how to put on the brakes, to bring some moderation to the emphasis on music and production and all that goes with it. So, many pastors I’ve met know this is dangerous and immature, but how do they stop it? How do they teach this? These pastors are relieved when I address the topic in a concert or teaching time because they think their people will listen to me better then them on this, I am a musician and I’m saying there’s more to worship then music, and I tell them that how they sing or what they sing is never addressed by Jesus, but how they live and love is. And the pastors stand in the back smiling.” - Shaun Groves | | |
| I have a new CD I’ve been listening to a lot lately so I wanted to tell you about it, It called “My Savior Lives”, by New Life Worship. New Life Church and its music team is home to a little group called Desperation Band, which includes Jared Anderson, now, if you read the liner notes on several other CD’s I’ve recommended, you will know Jared is the writer of popular worship songs like “Rescue” & “Amazed”, as well as many other great songs, this CD is loaded with a great mix of high energy and mellow, intimate songs, that are not only great for corporate sung worship, but can offer something in those personal moments too. So check it out, and enjoy!!!
